COURSE CURRICULUM

The Professional Doctorate in Art and Design is structured in two main parts, combining taught modules with an extensive independent research project. In the first part, students develop essential doctoral-level skills through engagement with research methodologies and academic communication. They explore qualitative research methods within the creative industries, refine their professional design practice, and establish a clear research direction through a structured proposal. Core modules focus on research approaches, practitioner-led inquiry, and professional discourses, while optional modules allow students to reflect on prior learning, undertake work-based projects, or deepen their practice through confirmative research. This stage also encourages active participation in research communities and critical engagement with wider academic and professional debates. The second part centres on a substantial independent work-based research project, which forms the core of the doctorate. Tailored to individual professional interests, this project enables students to apply their research within their chosen discipline, such as graphic design, digital media, fashion, or architecture. With expert supervision, students produce an original contribution to interdisciplinary art and design research. The final outcome includes both practical and written elements, demonstrating advanced knowledge, critical thinking, and innovation, and preparing graduates for leadership roles in the creative industries or academia.
