COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in TESOL is a two-year program designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in language teaching theory, practice, and research. In the first year, students focus on core modules such as Current Theories of Second Language Acquisition and English Language Teacher Education, which explore effective teaching strategies and the processes of language learning. Compulsory modules like Literary Research Methods and Approaches and the Thesis Proposal introduce essential research skills, helping students develop the ability to critically evaluate language education and prepare for independent study. Optional modules, including Key Issues in Linguistics and Teaching EFL, allow students to tailor their learning to their specific interests, enhancing both theoretical knowledge and practical application. In the second year, the focus shifts to the MA Dissertation (TESOL), a research-based project that enables students to apply their theoretical understanding and practical experience to a chosen area of TESOL. This dissertation provides the opportunity to explore curriculum design, applied linguistics, or other research areas in depth, while reinforcing reflective teaching practices. By engaging with both practical and research-focused aspects of TESOL, students develop the skills necessary for effective language teaching, curriculum development, and educational leadership. Graduates are prepared for diverse careers in TESOL, including classroom teaching, research, curriculum design, and leadership roles, as well as further academic study.
