COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Confucian Classical Studies includes a range of modules that develop students’ understanding of classical Chinese philosophy, literature, and historical texts. Through the Classical Chinese Texts in English module, students study translated classical writings while exploring the meanings and cultural significance behind important Chinese philosophical works. The program also includes Readings from the Compilation of Books and Writing on the Important Governing Principles and Readings from the Governing Principles of Ancient China, which examine traditional teachings on governance, ethics, and social responsibility that influenced Chinese political and moral thought for centuries. The Confucian Classical Studies module focuses specifically on the philosophy and teachings of Confucianism, exploring its influence on education, morality, and social harmony. Students also develop academic skills through the Research Methodology for the Study of Sinology module, where they learn the methods used to analyse historical texts, conduct research, and interpret classical writings within their historical and cultural contexts. Another key module, Interpretation of the Four Books, provides detailed study of foundational Confucian texts that shaped Chinese philosophy and education. The program concludes with a Dissertation in Classical Chinese Textual Studies, allowing students to carry out an independent research project on a chosen topic. Together, these modules strengthen students’ analytical, research, and interpretive skills while deepening their knowledge of Chinese intellectual traditions.
