COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Chinese Buddhist Textual Studies includes a range of modules that develop students’ ability to study, interpret, and analyse classical Chinese texts and Buddhist scriptures. The program includes a Dissertation in Classical Chinese Textual Studies, where students conduct an in-depth independent research project on a selected topic related to Chinese philosophy, religion, or literature. The Interpretation of the Four Books module focuses on the study of important Confucian texts that have shaped Chinese philosophy and moral thought for centuries. Through the Classical Chinese Texts in English module, students examine translated classical works while learning how key ideas and cultural meanings are communicated across languages. Research Methodology for the Study of Sinology introduces the academic methods used to analyse historical texts, allowing students to develop critical research and analytical skills. The module Readings from the Governing Principles of Ancient China explores traditional teachings related to governance, ethics, and social harmony in ancient Chinese society. Students also engage with important Buddhist scriptures through Chinese Buddhist Scriptural Studies modules, including detailed study of the Infinite Life Sutra and the Diamond Sutra, which are central texts in Buddhist philosophy and practice. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive understanding of Chinese classical literature, Buddhist thought, and traditional wisdom while strengthening students’ research, interpretation, and critical thinking skills.
