COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Ancient Religions program combines core modules with a variety of optional subjects that allow students to explore different religious traditions of the ancient world. The compulsory modules include Theory and Methodology for the Study of the Ancient World, which introduces the academic methods and analytical approaches used to investigate ancient societies and belief systems. Students also study Spaces, Places and Objects in Ancient Mediterranean Religions, examining how sacred spaces, landscapes, and artefacts shaped religious practices and experiences. A major component of the program is the MA Dissertation, where students conduct independent research on a chosen topic related to ancient religions, demonstrating advanced research and critical analysis skills. In addition to these core modules, students can choose from a range of optional subjects that cover different regions and themes. These include Ancient Egyptian Religion, Religions in China from 1500 BCE to 500 CE, and aspects of Greek and Roman religion and cult practices. Other modules explore sacred geography, cosmology, magic, and divination in ancient societies. Students may also study biblical texts and their interpretation, including modules on the Gospel of John and the transmission and reception of the Bible. Topics such as Celtic spirituality and hagiography are also available. Some modules alternate each year, offering variety while allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests.
