COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Ancient History program combines core research training with a range of specialised optional modules that allow students to explore different aspects of the ancient world. A key compulsory component is the MA Dissertation, which allows students to conduct substantial independent research on a chosen topic related to ancient history. Alongside this, the module Theory and Methodology for the Study of the Ancient World introduces students to the academic approaches, research methods, and analytical frameworks used to study ancient societies. These core elements help students develop strong critical thinking and research skills. In addition, the program offers a variety of optional modules that cover different regions, cultures, and themes from the ancient world. Students can study topics such as the history and culture of Late Antiquity, art and representation in the Ancient Near East, and religious practices in Greek and Roman societies. Language options, including Intensive Greek and Intensive Latin, allow students to build the linguistic skills necessary to engage directly with ancient texts and historical sources. Other modules explore subjects such as the relationship between Rome and the Indian Ocean in a global context, ancient Egyptian religion, and the portrayal of history through film. These options allow students to tailor their studies while gaining a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of the ancient world.
