COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Archaeological Practice is structured to develop both practical and research skills needed for careers in archaeology and the heritage sector. In the first stage of the program, students build a strong foundation in archaeological practice by learning excavation techniques, artefact handling, and environmental analysis. They are also introduced to digital archaeology and cultural heritage management, gaining insight into how archaeological discoveries are studied, preserved, and presented. A core module in Archaeological Research Methods develops essential analytical and investigative skills, preparing students for independent academic work. As the program progresses, students apply their knowledge in more practical and professional contexts. A major component is the MA Dissertation, where students conduct in-depth research on a chosen archaeological topic, demonstrating their ability to analyse evidence and present scholarly findings. The course also offers a variety of optional modules that allow students to specialise in areas such as practical archaeological skills, project design and delivery, heritage theory and policy, and archaeological reporting. Modules in digital humanities and heritage studies broaden understanding of how technology and cultural contexts influence archaeological research. Students may also undertake a work placement, gaining valuable real-world experience in museums, heritage organisations, or archaeological projects. Overall, the program combines practical training, research experience, and professional development to prepare graduates for careers in archaeology, heritage management, and related fields.
