COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Textiles – Contemporary Dialogues program at Swansea College of Art provides an in-depth exploration of both traditional and contemporary textile practices, encouraging students to investigate how these approaches can coexist and inform one another. Throughout the course, students are guided to experiment with conceptual thinking, blending hand-made techniques with digital textile processes to create innovative and boundary-pushing designs. The curriculum emphasizes critical reflection, creative problem-solving, and interdisciplinary collaboration, allowing students to develop a nuanced understanding of the relationship between materiality, process, and concept. Compulsory modules such as Coexistent Perspectives and The Thought Experiment encourage students to critically examine their practice, explore new ideas, and engage with theoretical frameworks that underpin contemporary textile design. Collaborative Dialogues fosters peer interaction and shared learning, while Explorative Research and Praxis and Confirmative Praxis provide extended opportunities for research-led projects, practical experimentation, and the development of a coherent, professional body of work. The course culminates in the application of both conceptual and technical skills, preparing students to present their practice in professional and exhibition contexts.
