COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology with Placement Year BSc (Hons) degree at Swansea College of Art UWTSD is structured to combine academic study with practical experience, preparing students for careers in psychology or further study. In the first year, students explore the foundations of psychology, including social, developmental, biological, and cognitive psychology, alongside research methods, conceptual and historical issues, personality, and investigative psychology. These modules provide essential knowledge and skills for understanding human behaviour and conducting psychological research. The second year builds on this foundation, deepening understanding of psychological theories and processes while enhancing quantitative and qualitative research skills. Students study brain, biology, and cognition, developmental psychology, occupational psychology, and research in action, with optional psychology placements or internships providing initial practical experience. The placement year allows students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, develop practical communication and research skills, and gain confidence working with clients or service users, bridging the gap between theory and practice. In the final year, students tailor their degree through modules aligned with their interests, such as clinical or forensic psychology, while completing a substantial empirical research project. Additional modules focus on social issues, ethics, and cognition in action, consolidating professional and academic skills. Overall, the program equips students with a strong scientific understanding of psychology, practical experience, and the professional competencies needed to succeed in diverse psychology careers.
