COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology with Counselling including Foundation Year BSc (Hons) degree at Swansea College of Art UWTSD is a structured program designed to build knowledge, skills, and professional competence over four years. The foundation year helps students develop core academic and digital skills, adjust to university life, and explore how psychology relates to everyday experience. Students study human thinking and behaviour while building confidence in research and academic study through modules such as Academic and Digital Skills, Psychology and You, and Researching People with Confidence. In the first year, students gain a deeper understanding of psychology and counselling, learning fundamental theories, research methods, mental health, and personality, with modules including Introduction to Counselling Skills, Personality and Individual Differences, and Mental Health Through Time. The second year focuses on advanced psychological theories and applied counselling practice, exploring areas such as brain, biology, and cognition, developmental psychology, and occupational psychology. Students apply their learning through case studies and have the option to undertake placements or internships. In the final year, emphasis is placed on professional practice, independent research, and specialised counselling skills, including person-centred therapy, reflexive counselling, cognition in action, and current debates in counselling. Across the program, students develop critical thinking, research proficiency, and practical counselling skills, preparing them for careers in psychology, counselling, or further study.
