COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology with Counselling BSc (Hons) degree at Swansea College of Art UWTSD is structured over three years to develop students’ understanding of human behaviour, mental health, and counselling practice. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of psychology and counselling, building foundational research skills and exploring topics such as personality, mental health, and conceptual and historical issues in psychology. They also gain practical skills in counselling and study methods to support their academic success. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced psychological theories and integrative counselling approaches. Students apply their learning to real-world scenarios, developing critical thinking and research skills, while modules such as brain, biology, and cognition, occupational psychology, and developmental psychology deepen their scientific understanding of human behaviour. Optional placements or internships provide practical experience. The final year emphasises professional practice and independent research, allowing students to specialise in areas of interest within psychology and counselling. Modules such as reflexive counselling skills, current debates in counselling, cognition in action, and the psychology empirical project consolidate theoretical knowledge and practical application. Across the course, students develop critical analysis, evidence-based reasoning, and applied therapeutic skills, preparing them for careers in mental health, counselling, or further study, equipped with both scientific understanding and professional competence.
