COURSE CURRICULUM

The Professional Policing BSc (Hons) degree at Swansea College of Art UWTSD is structured over three years to develop the knowledge, skills, and professional competencies required for a career in policing. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of professional policing, including response policing, basic criminal offences, the role of the constable, and the wider criminal justice system. Modules also focus on communication skills, academic and professional skills, and evidence-based preventative policing to establish a solid foundation. The second year builds on this knowledge by examining the complexities of crime, class, and victimisation, while exploring different responses to crime and deviance. Students develop critical evaluation skills and study specialised areas such as community and neighbourhood policing, policing vulnerability and risk, roads policing, and the Welsh policing context, alongside preparing for research within policing and employment pathways. The final year focuses on advanced policing topics, independent research, and the application of evidence-based strategies. Students study digital and operational policing, police investigations, public protection and counter-terrorism, and prepare for the role of a constable. The year culminates in a policing research project that consolidates learning and ensures graduates are equipped with the practical, analytical, and professional skills needed for recruitment and success in the police service, ready to respond effectively to diverse challenges in law enforcement.
