COURSE CURRICULUM

The History with a Foundation Year BA (Hons) program provides a structured pathway for students to develop a strong academic base before progressing to undergraduate-level history study. In the foundation year, students build essential skills in writing, research, and critical thinking while exploring broad themes in literature, democracy, human culture, and the humanities, preparing them for the intellectual demands of higher education. In the second year, the course deepens understanding of political, social, and cultural history, covering topics such as ancient life, myth, civilisation, and everyday life in historical societies. Students develop analytical skills through engagement with primary sources and historiographical evidence, learning to critically assess different perspectives and construct historical narratives. The third year offers flexibility with specialised modules, allowing students to focus on areas that match their interests and career goals, such as Renaissance history, Welsh history, global conflicts, and cultural heritage. The final year emphasises independent research, culminating in an Independent Project, and advanced modules further develop students’ abilities to analyse evidence and present well-structured historical arguments. Throughout the program, students gain the knowledge, research skills, and communication expertise necessary to create evidence-based interpretations of the past, preparing them for careers in research, education, media, heritage, and related fields while fostering a deep understanding of history’s relevance to the modern world.
