COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing with a Foundation Year program is structured to gradually develop students’ academic, creative, and professional writing skills over four years. The foundation year focuses on building essential academic abilities and confidence in creative practice. Students learn core skills such as academic writing, research methods, and critical thinking while exploring humanities topics and gaining a basic understanding of literature and cultural ideas. This preparation ensures students are ready for the demands of degree-level study. In the second year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of creative writing, exploring poetry, prose, and drama while studying literary traditions and critical theory. Modules help students experiment with language, voice, and form, encouraging them to develop their own writing style while understanding the broader context of literature and storytelling. In the third year, students deepen their creative practice by focusing on specific genres such as fiction, poetry, theatre writing, and screenwriting. They also engage with topics such as ecocriticism, Renaissance literature, cultural theory, and modern writing, while opportunities for professional placements, international mobility, and collaborative projects help connect academic study with real-world creative industries. In the final year, students concentrate on professional development and independence by completing a major independent project that demonstrates their mastery of a chosen genre or writing format, preparing them for careers in writing, publishing, media, and other creative fields.
