COURSE CURRICULUM

The Archaeology BA with a Foundation Year is a four-year program designed to build knowledge and skills progressively, starting with the foundation year, which equips students with essential academic abilities. In the first year, you develop core skills in academic writing, research, and independent investigation, while optional modules allow exploration of humanities themes, such as literature, human identity, and cultural understanding. In the second year, the focus shifts to archaeology and the humanities, with core modules introducing archaeological methods, material remains, and the study of societies from ancient Egypt to the Near East. Optional modules, including Death, Burial and the Afterlife and Myths and Mythology, allow deeper exploration of cultural beliefs and human-environment interactions. The third year emphasizes applying knowledge through advanced topics and practical experience. You will study human evolution, heritage, fieldwork, and material culture, refining analytical and research skills through modules such as Excavation and Fieldwork and Thinking With Things. Optional modules provide opportunities to explore specialized areas like conflict archaeology, museums, and ancient art. In the final year, students complete an Independent Project, enabling in-depth research on a chosen topic, supported by optional modules to enhance practical fieldwork and analytical expertise. By graduation, students are well-prepared for careers in archaeology, heritage, museums, or further academic study, combining theoretical understanding with practical skills.
