COURSE CURRICULUM

The Young People, Communities and Youth Work degree provides a comprehensive pathway to becoming a skilled youth worker, combining academic learning with practical experience. In the first year, students build a foundation in youth work and social education, exploring adolescence, societal influences, and essential skills such as advocacy and therapeutic practice. Modules focus on developing academic skills, understanding the principles and contexts of youth work, creating inclusive environments, and engaging in practical placements to apply learning in real-world settings. The second year deepens knowledge of social research methods, leadership, and management within youth work, while addressing complex issues such as mental health, well-being, and adverse childhood experiences. Students participate in practice-focused modules that emphasize empowerment, advocacy, and community resilience, alongside placements that enhance professional competence. In the final year, students examine advanced topics including trauma, exploitation, and toxic childhood, while undertaking an independent project that allows them to research a chosen area in depth. Modules focus on promoting adolescent well-being and resilience, understanding the impact of environments, and developing leadership skills for youth work settings.
