COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) in Sinology at Swansea College of Art UWTSD provides a comprehensive study of Chinese language, culture, and philosophy across three years. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts in Chinese culture and ethics through modules such as Traditional Chinese Morality and Ethics in Education and The Four Books. They develop core skills in reading Chinese texts and studying Sinograms, gaining the linguistic and cultural foundation necessary for advanced studies. The second year expands knowledge in Daoist literature, phonology, cultural discourse, and morality, with modules including Translation of Daoist Literature, The Daodejing, and the Records of Ritual. Students refine their translation skills and deepen their understanding of ancient texts, enhancing their appreciation for classical Chinese thought. In the final year, students synthesise their learning through advanced studies, including exegesis, the Canon of Change, and translation of Confucian and Buddhist literature. A dissertation allows for in-depth research on a specific area of interest, consolidating language, analytical, and interpretive skills while promoting independent scholarship. Across the program, students develop strong linguistic abilities, critical thinking, and cultural insight, preparing them for careers in teaching, research, translation, or international relations.
