COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) in Sinology (Humanistic Education) at Swansea College of Art UWTSD offers a structured exploration of Chinese classical texts, philosophy, and culture across three years. In the first year, students focus on foundational concepts, including Confucianism, traditional economic thought, and historical memory, while developing essential philological skills for interpreting classical Chinese texts. Modules such as Cultural Memory of Tang China, Four Books of Confucian Learning I, and An Introduction to Chinese Philology I establish the linguistic and cultural grounding necessary for deeper study. The second year examines the intersection of philosophy, governance, and education in Chinese thought, with further philological training to engage critically with Confucian classics. Modules include Political Thought in the Essentials of Bringing about Order from Assembled Texts, Four Books of Confucian Learning II, and Economic Principles in Traditional Chinese Philosophy II, emphasizing the role of humanistic education in shaping personal character and societal values. In the final year, students undertake independent research and a dissertation, applying advanced interpretive skills to explore humanistic education in Sinology. Additional modules, such as Literature for Moral Instruction in Late Imperial China and Mirroring History in Late Imperial China, deepen understanding of classical texts and their contemporary relevance. Throughout the program, students develop critical thinking, cultural literacy, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in education, research, or international cultural engagement.
