COURSE CURRICULUM

The Set Design and Production BA (Hons) degree at Swansea College of Art UWTSD is structured to develop students’ creative, technical, and professional skills across three progressive years. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of set design and production, building a core “toolbox” of skills through practical projects. They study design aesthetics, scenic construction, props, scenic art, costume, production technologies, and production for theatre, film, and television, establishing a foundation for further development. Optional personal projects allow for early creative exploration. The second year deepens technical expertise and portfolio development, with modules in design realisation, production for screen, virtual production practice, and production projects. Students gain hands-on experience in prop making, sculpting, and model making, with opportunities for internships, work placements, and international mobility to enhance professional experience and industry networks. In the final year, students focus on professional practice, transitioning from university to the creative industries. They undertake major independent projects, often collaborating with industry partners, while completing a professional practice module covering portfolio development, career planning, interview skills, and personal development. Additional modules include site-specific theatre, major projects, and optional placements or international opportunities. Across the program, students develop a versatile, industry-ready skill set, combining creativity, technical knowledge, and professional competence to succeed in set design and production across theatre, film, and television.
