COURSE CURRICULUM

The Primary Education with QTS BA (Hons) program at Swansea College of Art UWTSD is structured over three years to progressively develop the knowledge, skills, and professional attributes needed for a successful teaching career. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of primary education, including child development, curriculum frameworks, classroom management, and the role of communities, families, and schools in learning. They engage with child-led, experiential approaches to teaching and begin developing professional literacy, numeracy, and digital competence. Year two focuses on deepening understanding of core professional issues such as behaviour management, special educational needs, and diverse learning styles. Students take on increased teaching responsibilities, refine reflective practice and critical thinking, and explore optional modules in inclusive practice, literacy, science and technology, or health and wellbeing. The final year consolidates learning through advanced teaching practice, where students take further responsibility for a class and focus on key stages one and two. Modules cover innovative teaching strategies, resilience, and creativity, while continued support in Welsh language professional practice ensures readiness for the classroom. Graduates leave the program fully prepared to achieve Qualified Teacher Status, equipped with the practical experience, theoretical knowledge, and professional skills to make a positive impact in schools in Wales and beyond.
