COURSE CURRICULUM

The Photography in the Arts BA (Hons) program at Swansea College of Art UWTSD is structured over three years, progressively developing students’ technical skills, conceptual understanding, and professional practice. In the first year, students focus on foundational photographic art practice, engaging in visual studies to enhance creative thinking and perception. The curriculum emphasizes technical skill development, conceptual exploration, and early exhibition experience, alongside creating an artist zine to cultivate an individual artistic voice and narrative skills. Modules include Photographic Art Practice, Visual Studies, Ways of Thinking and Perceiving, Fugitive Testimonies, Exhibition 1.0, and The Artist Zine. In the second year, the program encourages experimental approaches and research-based practice. Students explore personal philosophies, visual enquiry, and contextual research while continuing to develop technical and conceptual skills through a second exhibition. Modules such as World Building, Experimental Strategies, Research in Context, Visual Enquiry, Exhibition 2.0, and Personal Philosophies prepare students for advanced creative exploration. The final year is dedicated to advanced creative enquiry and independent projects, allowing students to undertake a major project culminating in a final exhibition that demonstrates their expertise, style, and professional readiness. Modules include Advanced Creative Enquiry, Independent Project, and Major Project, supporting the refinement of technical abilities, conceptual thinking, and the creation of a professional portfolio to launch successful careers in the visual arts.
