COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy and History BA at UWTSD provides a comprehensive foundation in both disciplines, beginning with first-year modules that explore major philosophical questions about existence, ethics, and political philosophy, alongside key historical topics such as the modern world, ancient philosophy, and the role of myths in shaping societies. Students develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and research skills through a combination of theoretical and practical learning, including modules on historicising texts and doing history in practice. In years two and three, the program allows for greater specialization, with flexible options that let students explore topics across medieval and modern history, global events, and cultural developments, while philosophy modules deepen understanding of metaphysics, epistemology, existentialism, and applied ethics. Opportunities such as independent projects, professional placements, and international mobility experiences enable students to apply their knowledge and showcase their research capabilities. Students also explore interdisciplinary themes including gender, religion, global justice, and environmental ethics, linking historical context with philosophical inquiry. By combining rigorous historical study with philosophical reasoning, the course develops highly transferable skills such as critical analysis, effective communication, problem-solving, and independent research. Graduates are prepared for careers in academia, education, heritage, law, media, public policy, and other sectors that value analytical and reflective thinking.
