COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Outdoor Adventure Education develops both practical and academic skills to prepare students for careers in outdoor education and related sectors. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules covering adventure principles, facilitation, risk management, psychology, ecology, and academic skills. Learning is delivered through full-day practical experiences that develop expertise across a broad range of activity settings. In the second year, the focus shifts to applying theory in real-world contexts, with modules in outdoor leadership, coaching, expeditions, and research. Students participate in challenging locations and placements, gaining hands-on experience while collaborating with peers and tutors. Optional opportunities, such as international mobility, allow students to broaden their experience and professional development. The final year emphasises advanced professional preparation, covering critical incidents, perspectives on outdoor education, sustainable recreation, and ecopsychology. Students consolidate their learning through independent projects, building a professional portfolio that demonstrates their skills and knowledge. Optional modules in teaching, coaching, work placements, and curriculum design further enhance employability. Throughout the program, students develop leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities, combining theoretical knowledge with extensive practical experience. By the end of the degree, graduates are equipped to lead, educate, and manage in a wide range of outdoor adventure, health, and education settings, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, safety, and professional competence.
