COURSE CURRICULUM

The History BA program provides a structured progression from foundational knowledge to independent research and specialised study. In the first year, students develop core skills in historical inquiry, exploring political, social, and cultural histories while building research and analytical abilities. Modules introduce topics ranging from everyday life in ancient civilizations to medieval society, mythology, and the modern world, giving a broad understanding of historical contexts and perspectives. The second year allows deeper engagement with specialised topics, offering flexible modules that enhance critical thinking and analysis. Students study a variety of subjects, including Renaissance literature, European and global conflicts, Welsh history, cultural heritage, and historical research using special collections. This year emphasizes understanding diverse historical experiences and the methods used to interpret and represent the past, often through professional placements and practical research exercises. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through an Independent Project, conducting original research on a topic of choice and applying advanced historiographical methods. Optional modules allow further specialisation in areas such as political economy, religion, colonial and postcolonial studies, and cultural heritage. By graduation, students possess the ability to critically analyse sources, construct evidence-based narratives, and communicate complex historical arguments, equipping them with skills applicable to careers in research, education, heritage, and beyond.
