COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Fine Art: Studio, Site and Context program, students build a strong foundation in studio-based artistic practice. They develop practical skills through work in specialised workshops, experimenting with a variety of materials and media while exploring the concepts and philosophies that influence contemporary art. Modules such as visual studies, ways of thinking and perceiving, site and audience, and materials, construction and deconstruction encourage students to understand how artistic ideas are formed and expressed. Students also begin to present their work through exhibition practice and creative formats such as the artist zine, helping them develop confidence in sharing their ideas with an audience. In the second year, students refine their individual artistic practice by experimenting further with different media and techniques. The focus shifts toward expanding creative exploration through interdisciplinary work and collaborative projects. Students engage with critical theory and research modules that deepen their understanding of artistic context and their role within society. Practical modules such as concept and process, stimulus and response, and world building support the development of creative ideas, while exhibition opportunities allow students to present evolving work. In the final year, students concentrate on advanced independent practice and major creative projects. They work closely with lecturers to develop a specialised body of work, culminating in a final exhibition that showcases their artistic development and prepares them for professional careers in fine art.
