COURSE CURRICULUM

The Documentary Photography and Visual Activism program is designed to progressively develop students’ technical, creative, and professional skills in documentary photography while encouraging socially engaged visual storytelling. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in photographic practice and visual studies. They learn traditional darkroom techniques, professional studio and location lighting, and how to use Adobe software, while exploring both analogue and digital processes to create innovative photographic work. Students also study the history of photography and visual culture, gaining an understanding of documentary practice and photojournalism. Early projects include producing artist zines and participating in their first exhibition, helping them develop creative confidence and critical thinking. In the second year, students expand their experimentation and collaborative work while focusing on visual activism and public engagement. They design and curate group exhibitions, create photobooks, and explore alternative darkroom processes. Modules also address research, visual enquiry, and publication, encouraging students to use photography as a tool for protest and social change. Opportunities for funded internships and international study further enhance professional development. In the final year, students focus on professional preparation and personal creative direction. Through advanced creative enquiry, an independent project, and a major project, they develop a strong professional portfolio that reflects their interests and ambitions, preparing them for careers in documentary photography, media, and the wider creative industries.
