COURSE CURRICULUM

The Design Crafts: Glass, Ceramics and Jewellery program is structured to gradually develop students’ creative, technical, and professional skills across three years. In the first year, students are introduced to a wide range of materials and processes, including ceramics, glass, and jewellery. They learn fundamental hand-making techniques while also gaining experience with modern technologies such as CAD and CAM, laser cutting, and 3D printing. Modules focus on developing visual literacy, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design thinking, and an understanding of design principles and contextual practices. Students also begin building professional skills by learning how to create digital portfolios and develop an online presence. In the second year, the focus shifts toward expanding technical expertise and creative exploration. Students work on more advanced design and making projects, developing the skills needed to create finished craft artefacts. They engage with research methods and commercial design challenges, often working on live briefs and client-based scenarios, either individually or as part of multidisciplinary teams. Professional practice modules help students develop their design identity and prepare for commercial output. In the final year, students specialise in their chosen area and focus on defining their personal creative direction. Through advanced enquiry, an independent project, and a major project, they develop a personal design philosophy, refine their technical abilities, and build a strong portfolio that prepares them for professional careers in the design crafts industry.
