COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing program is structured over three years to develop students’ creative, analytical, and professional writing skills across a wide range of literary forms. In the first year, students explore the foundations of poetry, prose, and drama through introductory modules that focus on storytelling, literary analysis, and the study of literature and theory. Courses such as myths and mythology, popular fiction, and approaches to form help students understand how narratives shape culture while workshop sessions allow them to share their work and receive feedback from tutors and peers. In the second year, students broaden their focus by exploring voice, form, and place in greater depth while studying specialised topics such as speculative fiction, writing for theatre, screen and radio writing, and aspects of twentieth and twenty-first century literature. Students also develop research skills through modules involving archives and critical theory, and may undertake opportunities such as professional placements or international mobility. In the final year, students concentrate on producing a major independent creative project, supported by advanced workshops and one-to-one guidance from experienced writers. Additional modules explore areas such as novel writing, speculative fiction, and the professional aspects of writing, including pitching and editing, helping students prepare for careers in publishing, media, and the wider creative industries.
