COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing and Philosophy degree is structured to develop both creative expression and critical thinking across three years of study. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in writing and philosophical thinking by exploring poetry, prose, and drama while studying key literary and cultural topics. Modules introduce the fundamentals of storytelling, literary theory, and the role of myths, popular fiction, and historical texts in shaping society. Students also engage with humanities subjects that encourage reflection on identity, ethics, and knowledge, helping them develop analytical and argumentation skills. In the second year, students deepen their creative and critical abilities through modules that focus on voice, experimentation, and advanced writing forms such as short stories, theatre writing, and novel writing. At the same time, they examine important literary and philosophical themes including Renaissance literature, ecocriticism, cultural theory, and modern writing. Opportunities for interdisciplinary work allow students to connect philosophical ideas with creative practice. Students may also gain practical experience through options such as professional placements or international mobility. In the final year, students specialise in their preferred writing forms and complete an independent project that combines creative and research skills. Advanced modules explore topics such as speculative fiction, screenwriting, literary theory, and philosophical debates, enabling students to refine their analytical perspective while preparing for careers in writing, publishing, media, or related fields.
