COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing and English program is structured to gradually develop students’ creative, critical, and research skills over three years. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in both creative and analytical writing. Core learning introduces key literary and cultural concepts through modules such as exploring the humanities, while optional modules allow students to study topics like myths and mythology, historicising texts, popular fiction, and the study of literature and theory. Students also begin developing their writing skills through modules such as introduction to the craft of writing and gain a broader understanding of how stories interact with society and the environment. In the second year, students deepen their critical engagement with literature while expanding their creative writing abilities. They explore Renaissance drama, cultural theory, and historical literary contexts while also developing practical skills in areas such as writing for television, film, and radio, short story writing, and novel writing. Additional opportunities include speculative fiction, performance poetry, professional placements, and international mobility experiences. In the final year, students focus on producing an independent project that combines creative practice with academic research. Advanced modules allow students to specialise in areas such as Renaissance literature, philosophy in literature, ecocriticism, speculative fiction, or professional writing. Access to special collections and archival research further strengthens analytical and research skills, preparing graduates for careers in writing, publishing, media, or academia.
