COURSE CURRICULUM

The Archaeology BA program provides a structured progression from foundational knowledge to advanced independent research. In the first year, students develop a solid grounding in archaeology and the humanities, exploring the origins and development of societies from Egypt to the Near East. Core modules introduce essential concepts, while optional courses such as hieroglyphs, mythology, and practical fieldwork allow students to build a broad understanding of past human cultures and their environments. In the second year, the focus shifts to applying knowledge through analysis of artefacts and archaeological methods, examining how societies adapted to challenges and how material culture shapes our understanding of human behaviour. Students can choose from a wide range of optional modules covering topics like ancient health and medicine, households, museums, heritage, and field excavation, enhancing both analytical and practical skills. In the final year, students undertake a substantial independent project, allowing in-depth exploration of a personal research interest. Optional modules provide opportunities to specialise further, including advanced study of hieroglyphs, human evolution, heritage management, and practical excavation techniques. Throughout the program, practical fieldwork, excavation, and laboratory experience complement theoretical learning, ensuring students develop the skills and knowledge necessary for careers in archaeology, heritage management, research, or further academic study.
