COURSE CURRICULUM

The Archaeology and History BA program provides a comprehensive exploration of the human past, combining practical archaeological methods with historical analysis. In the first year, students gain a foundation in studying material remains, including artefacts, stone tools, and bones, while learning to analyse historical evidence through primary sources. Core modules such as Exploring the Humanities and optional modules like Hieroglyphs, Death, Burial and the Afterlife, and Doing Archaeology: The Past in Practice introduce key concepts and begin developing practical and analytical skills. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of archaeological methods and historical study through field research, examining regions such as the Mediterranean, Greece, and Rome. Modules focus on social and cultural history, material culture, and ethnography, preparing students for independent research. Opportunities for professional placements and advanced topics such as Human Evolution, Ancient Lives in Death, and Activism, Protest and Campaigning for Global Justice enhance practical experience and critical engagement. In the final year, students specialise in areas of interest, applying advanced techniques including digital applications and ancient DNA analysis, while refining historical analysis and research skills. An Independent Project allows students to conduct in-depth research, synthesising their learning across both disciplines. Graduates develop analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in archaeology, heritage, museums, education, and further study, offering a thorough understanding of human societies across time.
