COURSE CURRICULUM

The Archaeology and Anthropology BA joint-honours program provides a comprehensive study of human societies, combining the study of past and present cultures. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules such as Exploring the Humanities, Anthropology Today, and People’s Worlds: Interaction with the Environment, alongside optional modules like Hieroglyphs, Death, Burial and the Afterlife, and Doing Archaeology: The Past in Practice. These modules introduce students to key concepts in archaeology and anthropology while encouraging the application of theory to practice. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge with advanced topics in archaeological methods, cultural anthropology, material culture, ethnography, and fieldwork techniques. Modules include Ancestors, Death and Burial, Excavation and Fieldwork, Museums, Heritage and Representation, and Anthropology of Globalisation, allowing students to engage in independent research, professional placements, and even international mobility opportunities. The final year focuses on specialised topics and independent study, with core modules like Theories in Anthropology and The Archaeology of Modernity, alongside an Independent Project where students apply their research skills. Optional modules offer further exploration of areas such as fieldwork, hieroglyphs, ethics, global justice, religion, and material culture, equipping graduates with analytical, research, and critical thinking skills applicable to careers in heritage, research, museums, and international development.
