COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Ancient History program is organised over three years to build a strong understanding of the classical world, particularly the societies of Greece and Rome. In the first year, students gain a broad introduction to ancient cultures by studying mythology, humanities, and everyday life in Athens and Rome. These core modules provide a foundation for understanding how ancient societies functioned. Students can also choose optional modules such as Greek or Latin language, ancient philosophy, archaeology, death and burial practices, and the development of early civilisations, allowing them to explore different aspects of the ancient world. In the second year, the course becomes more specialised, focusing on key historical themes and events in classical history. Students study subjects such as Roman and medieval mythology, the history of Pompeii, the lives of important figures like Caesar and Cicero, and the transformation of the Roman world in late antiquity. Additional modules explore ancient warfare, gender and religion, fieldwork, and the interactions between different ancient cultures. Opportunities for professional placements and international study may also be available. In the final year, students complete a major independent research project on a topic of their choice while continuing to study advanced modules on Roman history, mythology, and warfare, further developing their analytical and research skills.
