COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Ancient Civilisations program is structured over three years to develop students’ understanding of ancient societies through history, archaeology, and cultural studies. In the first year, students gain a broad introduction to the ancient world by exploring the Mediterranean and Near East regions and learning about everyday life in cities such as Athens and Rome. Core modules focus on the foundations of civilisation and the humanities, while optional modules allow students to explore topics such as hieroglyphs, mythology, ancient philosophy, archaeology, and classical languages like Greek and Latin. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge of specific ancient cultures and examine how the past is represented in the modern world. Core modules focus on Ancient Egypt, particularly its art, death practices, and modern exhibitions. Optional modules allow students to study subjects such as Pompeii, Sparta, ancient warfare, Roman history, mythology, and the world of Han China. Opportunities for fieldwork, museum studies, professional placements, and international mobility are also available. In the final year, students complete an independent research project that allows them to investigate a chosen topic in greater depth. Additional optional modules enable further specialisation in areas such as archaeology, classical history, heritage, and cultural representation, helping students develop strong research and analytical skills.
