COURSE CURRICULUM

The Structural Engineering MSc program provides a comprehensive and advanced exploration of the principles and practices necessary for designing, analysing, and managing modern structures. In the first semester, students focus on core modules such as steel building design and structural mechanics with finite element methods, which develop a strong foundation in structural analysis, material behaviour, and computational modelling. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning to specialised areas, including prestressed concrete bridge design, durability of bridges and structures, infrastructure systems, interdependencies and resilience, infrastructure asset management, advanced soil mechanics, and energy geotechnics. In the second semester, the program continues with compulsory modules covering concrete building design, sustainability and infrastructure, and building information modelling, equipping students with practical skills in sustainable design, structural integration, and digital construction tools. Optional modules in the second semester enable further specialisation, with topics such as steel and composite bridge design, water resources management and hydraulic modelling, deep foundations and earth retaining structures, geographical information science and remote sensing, and nature-based solutions in environmental engineering. Across both semesters, students undertake a dissertation project that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical applications, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills. Graduates are prepared for careers in structural design, consultancy, construction, infrastructure management, and research, with the expertise to contribute to complex and innovative engineering projects.
