COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics MSc at Surrey offers students the opportunity to tailor their learning through a wide range of optional modules, allowing them to specialise according to their interests and career ambitions. In the first semester, students can choose from advanced topics such as nonlinear wave equations, manifolds and topology, artificial intelligence and financial informatics, financial markets and derivative pricing, mathematical ecology and epidemiology, mathematical modelling of weather and climate, advanced algebra, and Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics. This flexibility enables students to explore both pure and applied mathematical areas, combining theoretical depth with practical relevance. The second semester focuses on independent research through a compulsory dissertation, providing students with the opportunity to apply mathematical concepts and methods to a substantial, original project. Additional optional modules in this semester include graphs and networks, representation theory, calculus of variations, Riemannian geometry, principles and mathematics of data science, topics in theoretical physics, mathematical fluid mechanics, data-driven methods, and nonlinear patterns. By selecting modules strategically, students can gain expertise across multiple areas, from advanced algebra and geometry to applied mathematics, computational techniques, and interdisciplinary applications. Overall, the program equips students with strong analytical, computational, and research skills, preparing them for careers in academia, industry, finance, data science, and technology, or for further doctoral study.
