COURSE CURRICULUM

The Cyber Security MSc at Surrey is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the technical, managerial, and strategic aspects of cyber security. In the first semester, students study secure systems and applications alongside cryptography, which provide the foundational knowledge required to design and protect digital infrastructures. Optional modules allow students to explore specialised areas such as architectural thinking for security, privacy-enhancing technologies, and digital forensics, offering practical insight into protecting sensitive data and investigating digital incidents. In the second semester, the focus shifts to network security and cyber security management and governance, equipping students with the skills to oversee organisational security practices, implement policies, and manage risk effectively. Additional optional modules in this semester, including cloud security, cybercrime and cybersecurity, ethical hacking and penetration testing, and systems verification, give students hands-on experience in defensive and offensive cyber strategies, preparing them to handle real-world challenges. Throughout the program, students undertake a dissertation, which enables them to investigate a chosen area of cyber security in depth, applying research methods and critical analysis to address contemporary issues. The curriculum blends theory with practice, ensuring that graduates leave with the technical expertise, analytical skills, and professional insight needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving cyber security landscape across multiple industries.
