COURSE CURRICULUM

The Advanced Geotechnical Engineering MSc at Surrey provides a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for modern geotechnical practice. In the first semester, students undertake compulsory modules in advanced soil mechanics and energy geotechnics, which focus on understanding the behaviour of soils under varying conditions and the application of geotechnical principles in energy-related projects. Alongside these, optional modules such as prestressed concrete bridge design, durability of bridges and structures, steel building design, structural mechanics and finite elements, infrastructure systems, and global challenges in water and health allow students to tailor their studies to specific areas of interest and industry relevance. The second semester builds on this foundation with compulsory modules in sustainability and infrastructure, deep foundations and earth retaining structures, and geographical information science and remote sensing, ensuring students gain knowledge in sustainable practices, complex foundation design, and advanced geospatial analysis techniques. Optional modules include steel and composite bridge design, concrete building design, water resources management and hydraulic modelling, building information modelling, and nature-based solutions in environmental engineering, providing additional flexibility to align with career goals. Throughout both semesters, students complete a dissertation project, offering the opportunity to conduct independent research, apply advanced analytical methods, and develop practical solutions to real-world geotechnical engineering challenges, preparing graduates for high-demand careers in construction, environmental engineering, and consultancy.
