COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes in Economics at Surrey is structured to provide an intensive and comprehensive foundation in advanced economic theory, quantitative methods, and research skills over a single year. In the first semester, students engage with core modules in advanced microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, alongside an introduction to research methods. These modules equip students with the analytical and statistical tools necessary to understand complex economic phenomena, develop rigorous models, and critically evaluate empirical findings. In the second semester, the curriculum builds on this foundation with further advanced coursework in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, complemented by advanced research methods that emphasize practical application, critical thinking, and methodological precision. Throughout both semesters, students also undertake an advanced research project, providing an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge and quantitative skills to a substantial piece of original research. This project allows students to investigate an economic question in depth, synthesize existing literature, and contribute new insights to the field. By combining intensive theoretical training with hands-on research experience, the program develops highly skilled graduates equipped for doctoral studies, high-level research roles, and careers in finance, government, or business sectors where advanced economic analysis is essential.
