COURSE CURRICULUM

The MMus in Music provides students with a comprehensive and flexible curriculum designed to develop advanced skills in performance, composition, and music research. In the first semester, students undertake compulsory research training to build essential academic and analytical skills, while optional modules allow them to explore areas such as performance, composition, studio techniques, music projects, and topic studies, giving them the freedom to tailor their learning to their interests and professional goals. The second semester continues this dual focus, with research training for practitioners and the Master’s portfolio as compulsory components, ensuring students integrate their practical work with critical reflection and scholarly practice. Optional modules in the second semester expand opportunities to study digital performance, modernism and postmodernism, additional composition work, performance, and topic studies, supporting the development of a well-rounded and versatile musical skill set. Across both semesters, students select modules amounting to 105 credits, with restrictions on taking Level 6 modules to ensure progression to advanced study. This structure promotes a balance between practical expertise, creative experimentation, and research-informed practice, allowing students to consolidate their artistic identity while gaining the technical proficiency and critical insight needed for a successful career in contemporary music or further academic pursuits.
