COURSE CURRICULUM

This two-year theatre program provides a comprehensive and structured exploration of the history, theory, and practice of theatre, guiding students from classical foundations to contemporary performance. In the first year, students engage with the study of the Greeks, examining the origins of Western theatre, and Shakespeare, exploring the complexities of early modern drama. Alongside these core modules, students develop practical and theoretical skills in Naturalism and the Actor, and gain essential contextual knowledge through The Background to Theatre, which runs across both semesters. The second year builds on this foundation, focusing on Modern Theatre to understand developments in dramatic form, style, and performance techniques. Students also explore Music and Dance in Theatre, recognizing the integral role of multidisciplinary elements in live performance. Core modules such as Global Theatres encourage a broader understanding of theatre practices worldwide, while Professional Development equips students with the practical skills and industry knowledge necessary for a career in theatre. The Independent Research Project allows learners to undertake in-depth investigation into a topic of their choice, fostering critical thinking, analytical skills, and creative inquiry. Overall, the program combines historical study, practical application, and research-led learning to prepare students for diverse roles in performance, education, production, and theatre management, ensuring a well-rounded, professional grounding in the theatrical arts.
