COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Microbiology course provides a comprehensive exploration of microorganisms and their role in health, disease, and industry. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in cell biology, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry, alongside practical skills in laboratory techniques and biomedical bacteriology. This foundation equips students with the essential scientific understanding and technical abilities needed to study complex microbial systems. In the second year, the focus shifts to applied microbiology, covering areas such as medical microbiology, food microbiology, immunology, pathology, and pharmacology. Students also have the option to explore specialized subjects such as enzymes and metabolism, integration of physiological systems, analytical biochemistry, and food quality control, which broadens their understanding of microbial applications in healthcare, food safety, and biotechnology. The final year emphasizes advanced study and research, including clinical immunology, immunohaematology, biomedical microbial products, systems biology, epidemiology of infectious diseases, and virology. Students can further tailor their learning with optional modules on cancer pathogenesis and therapeutics or animal infectious diseases. A major component of the degree is an independent research project, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills to investigate real-world microbiological problems. Graduates leave with strong analytical, practical, and research skills, prepared for careers in healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, public health, or further scientific study.
