COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Medicinal Chemistry course provides a comprehensive education in chemistry and its application to drug discovery, preparing students for careers in pharmaceutical research and related industries. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in cell biology, analytical chemistry, the periodic table and reactivity of elements, mathematics, computing, and statistical skills. They also study physiology, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and develop transferable skills essential for scientific practice. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced chemistry topics, including carbon-carbon bond formation, heterocyclic chemistry, applied organic spectroscopy, analytical instrumentation, materials chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, and drug discovery. Students may also choose optional modules such as pharmacology or computer modelling in chemistry to broaden their expertise. In the final year, students deepen their knowledge through modules in organic synthesis and spectroscopy, medicinal chemistry, and may select from advanced topics including organometallic chemistry, computer modelling, physical chemistry methods, and advanced pharmacology. A significant component of the final year is the BSc research project, allowing students to apply theoretical and practical skills to an independent investigation. Throughout the course, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical laboratory skills, equipping them for careers in medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical development, or further research in chemistry and related fields.
