COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Media and Communication degree at Surrey provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how media shapes and is shaped by society, equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for careers in media, communications, and related industries. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts in the social world, mediated societies, visual media, popular culture, and research methods, providing a solid base for understanding the role of media in contemporary life. In the second year, the focus shifts to media power, regulation, audiences, and global communication, while students can choose from optional modules such as social media and society, migration and identity, crime and media, and qualitative research methods, allowing them to tailor their studies to individual interests. The final year emphasises advanced topics such as data and the digital in platform societies, public relations in the digital age, and ethics and regulation of artificial intelligence, with optional modules in areas like political communication, youth culture, music and media, sociology of mental health, and race and racism. Throughout the course, students develop critical analytical skills, research capabilities, and practical understanding of media production and communication strategies, culminating in a final-year project that integrates learning across the program. Graduates are prepared for careers in journalism, digital media, public relations, policy, and media consultancy, with the ability to navigate and influence the rapidly evolving media landscape.
