COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Chemistry degree offers a comprehensive and hands-on approach to understanding chemical science, preparing students for diverse careers in research, industry, education, and beyond. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in analytical, physical, organic, and environmental chemistry while developing essential skills in mathematics, computing, and statistics. Optional modules such as forensic science and data analysis allow students to explore specific interests. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced topics, including organic carbon-carbon bond formation, heterocyclic chemistry, applied organic spectroscopy, and materials chemistry. Students also study phases, colloids, and electronic transitions, as well as the structure, bonding, and reactions of inorganic compounds. Optional modules in bioorganic chemistry, drug discovery, computer modelling, forensic chemistry, and radiochemistry provide opportunities to tailor learning and gain specialist knowledge. In the final year, students engage with complex areas of study such as organic synthesis and spectroscopy, organometallic chemistry, molecular symmetry, and modern methods in physical chemistry. Optional modules include polymer chemistry, medicinal chemistry, analytical method development, and forensic or computational topics. Throughout the degree, students undertake a research project, allowing them to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical investigation, develop problem-solving skills, and gain hands-on experience in modern laboratories. This combination of theoretical understanding, practical skills, and research experience equips graduates to pursue careers in chemistry or further study at the postgraduate level.
