COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences degree provides a broad and integrated understanding of life, from molecular processes to ecosystems, while equipping students with practical skills and research experience. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in Cell Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Physiology, Evolution, and Biochemistry, alongside essential skills for academic and laboratory success. The second year develops deeper understanding and application through modules in Molecular Biology and Genetics, Integration of Physiological Systems, Experimental Biology, and Biodiversity, while optional modules such as Neuroscience, Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Pharmacology, and Ecology allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests. Emphasis is placed on practical experimentation, data analysis, and critical thinking to prepare students for independent research. In the final year, students engage in a substantial Research Project while selecting from a wide range of advanced optional modules, including topics in Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbial Communities, Animal Diversity, Systems Biology, Cancer, Neuroscience, Epidemiology, and Environmental Sustainability. This combination of core and elective study enables students to specialize in areas aligned with their career or postgraduate aspirations. Overall, the degree equips graduates with theoretical knowledge, practical expertise, and analytical skills necessary for careers in biotechnology, healthcare, research, environmental management, and other biological sciences fields.
