COURSE CURRICULUM

The BMus (Hons) degree provides students with a comprehensive and versatile education in music, combining practical, theoretical, and historical study across a wide range of musical styles. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in harmony, music history, and musicianship, while engaging in performance and arrangement projects. They also explore popular and classical music through case studies and may choose optional modules in music technology, composition, or performance, enabling them to tailor their learning to individual interests. In the second year, students advance their knowledge with studies in jazz and popular music forms, nineteenth-century music, and continued project work. Optional modules allow further specialization in composition, performance, topical studies, and arts policy, encouraging both creative exploration and critical analysis. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics such as modernism and postmodernism, while continuing their individual projects and optional modules in composition, performance, digital performance, and thematic studies. Across all years, the program emphasizes practical experience, critical thinking, and creative innovation, preparing students for diverse careers in performance, composition, education, music technology, and research. Graduates emerge with well-developed musical skills, artistic insight, and the ability to collaborate effectively, making them highly adaptable and confident in pursuing professional opportunities or further study.
