COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature and Creative Writing degree offers a dynamic combination of literary study and creative practice, designed for students who wish to develop strong analytical skills alongside practical writing abilities. In the first year, students focus on foundational literary understanding and creative writing techniques through modules such as Understanding the Novel, Introduction to Creative Writing, Thinking Like a Writer, and Thinking Like a Critic, alongside Literary Histories, providing a balance of theoretical and practical skills. Optional modules in poetry and stage and screen allow students to explore different forms of expression. The second year builds on this foundation with compulsory modules in Elements of Narrative, Gender and Sexuality in Contemporary Texts and Cultures, Contemporary Storytelling, and Contemporary Postcolonial Fictions and Cultures, while offering a wide range of optional modules, including Victorian, Romantic, Gothic, and science fiction literature, translation studies, life writing, and interdisciplinary courses, allowing students to tailor their studies. In the third year, students engage with advanced topics and specialized creative practice through optional modules such as Contemporary Shakespeare, Beat Writing, Writing Gaming, Screenwriting, and Medieval Women’s Writing, while producing a dissertation and a Creative Writing Submission that demonstrate independent research and original creative output. The program prepares students for careers in writing, publishing, media, education, and related creative industries.
