COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Applied and Contemporary Theatre degree provides a clear progression from foundational skills to professional practice, preparing students to become socially engaged and innovative theatre-makers. In the first year, students are introduced to core aspects of performance through modules such as Performance Fundamentals, The Actor and the Ensemble, and Theatre Studies. These establish essential skills in acting, collaboration, and critical analysis while encouraging exploration of how theatre functions as both an art form and a tool for communication. In the second year, the focus shifts towards practical application and industry experience. Modules such as Professional Placement give students the chance to work in real-world contexts, while Sustaining and Supporting Performance and Theatre Making help them develop the ability to devise, produce, and deliver creative work. The Ensemble and the Audience emphasizes the interactive nature of performance and the importance of connecting with communities. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through Creating Performance, which allows for the development of original projects, alongside Advanced Performance, which refines their artistic practice. Professional Development prepares students for careers in the theatre and creative industries, equipping them with the confidence, skills, and networks to work as performers, facilitators, or creative entrepreneurs.
